“Two is the magic number”, according to the polymath Jacob Bronowski–as expressed in his book “The Ascent of Man”. This sculpture tries to present in the purist of forms the purist representation of what Dr. Bronowski had in mind: the human couple, man and woman.

There is tremendous weight overhead and it may appear precarious. However, the columns seem sufficiently strong and placed sufficiently close together to ensure support, less the victory be short lived.

The trapezoid is a classic geometric form for a support base, upon which something of importance is meant to be presented. Any number of examples can be given: from the Mayan temples of antiquity to the trapezoidal shaped stages of so many commemoration events in today’s society. In this modest artwork at hand it is a support base about to be envelopped by a reclining form to its left, apparently bearing a heavy load.

Wood is almost sacred for the artist, having, you might say, grown up in them while at play as a child–and forever working with it at the same time, building treehouses, building animal traps, pond rafts, or what have you. This chalise has been shaped out of wood by bending–till they break–the strips of wood into place.
